National Organizations

This list of mostly national organizations dedicated to promoting diversity and civil rights is just a sampling of the many groups that are doing outstanding work. If you feel we have overlooked an important resource, please email us.

African American Policy Forum (AAPF) "The African American Policy Forum (AAPF) is a think tank focused on human rights issues, specifically on issues of racial justice and gender equality. It brings together academics, activists, and policy makers to inform public discourse and change government and business policies in ways that promote inclusivity and equity."
American Association for Access, Equity and Diversity "The American Association for Access, Equity and Diversity is a group of equal opportunity and affirmative action officers concerned with the implementation of the tenets of access, inclusion and equality in employment, economic and educational opportunities."
American Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD) "The American Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD) is a convener, connector, and catalyst for change, increasing the political and economic power of people with disabilities."
American Association of University Women (AAUW) "The American Association of University Women (AAUW) is a national organization that promotes education and equity for all women and girls since 1881. AAUW publishes numerous research publications and brochures related to education of girls and women, school reform and community action."
American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) "The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) states it is committed to fighting for freedom and the protection of constitutional rights in the United States. The ACLU has filed Supreme Court cases and has focused on issues like capital punishment, criminal law reform, LGBTQ rights, racial justice, reproductive rights, voting rights, and more. Their site connects to recent news and commentary, information on court cases, and the organization's history."
Anti-Defamation League (ADL) "Founded in 1913 in response to an escalating climate of antisemitism and bigotry, its timeless mission is to stop the defamation of the Jewish people, and to secure justice and fair treatment to all. Today, ADL continues to fight all forms of hate with the same vigor and passion."
Asian Americans Advancing Justice 'Advocacy, research, education, leadership development, and litigation organization whose mission is to advance the civil and human rights for Asian Americans and to build and promote a fair and equitable society for all."
Boston University Center for Antiracist Research "The mission of the Boston University Center for Antiracist Research is to convene researchers and practitioners from various disciplines to figure out novel and practical ways to understand, explain, and solve seemingly intractable problems of racial inequity and injustice." Founded by Ibram X. Kendi in 2020.
Hudson Valley LGBTQ Community Center "As a safe, supportive environment, the Hudson Valley LGBTQ Community Center provides services, professional resources, and programs that unite the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer/questioning community across lines of age, race, gender, and economics."
Human Rights Campaign "The Human Rights Campaign envisions a world where every member of the LGBTQ family has the freedom to live their truth without fear, and with equality under the law. "
Indian Country Today "Indian Country Today is a nonprofit, multimedia news enterprise. Our digital platform covers the Indigenous world, including American Indians and Alaska Natives. Indian Country Today is also a public media broadcast carried over FNX: First Nations Experience and Arizona PBS World channel."
Interfaith Alliance "The Interfaith Alliance is a nonprofit organization composed of activists from different religions. Members share the belief that US citizens deserve equal freedom of religion regardless of which religion they practice."
Learning for Justice (formerly Teaching Tolerance) "Founded by the SPLC under the name Teaching Tolerance in 1991, Learning for Justice was originally created to prevent the growth of hate by reducing prejudice. In the last 30 years, our work has evolved to center justice and the action that students and educators can take to realize change."
LULAC (League of United Latin American Citizens) "LULAC is the largest and oldest Hispanic organization in the United States. LULAC advances the economic condition, educational attainment, political influence, housing, health and civil rights of Hispanic Americans through community-based programs operating at more than 1,000 LULAC councils nationwide. The organization involves and serves all Hispanic nationality groups."
NAACP "The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) was founded in 1909 to combat racism and segregation and promote civil rights for black Americans. In the twenty-first century, the organization continues to strive against racial discrimination among all groups, and to promote political, educational, social, and economic equity."
National Center on Disability and Journalism
Part of the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism at Arizona State University, providing resources related to disability issues and organizations.
Native America Today "NAM interfaces with corporate and government sectors to support their diversity/minority inclusion initiatives. Programs include: media and advertising outreach, fostering cultural awareness, promoting career and employment opportunities, business enterprise development, and providing social service and other referrals through Native America Today’s community resource section."
NCAN (National College Attainment Network) NCAN's mission is "to build, strengthen, and empower communities and stakeholders to close equity gaps in postsecondary attainment for all students."
NOW (National Organization for Women) "As the grassroots arm of the women’s movement, the National Organization for Women is dedicated to its multi-issue and multi-strategy approach to women’s rights, and is the largest organization of feminist grassroots activists in the United States."
Stop AAPI Hate "Stop AAPI Hate was created in California in 2020 to track acts of violence against Asian-Americans and Pacific Islanders, which have risen significantly during the pandemic."
UnidosUS "UnidosUS, formerly the National Council of La Raza (NCLR), is a national organization that promotes civil rights and economic opportunities for Hispanics. It provides technical assistance to Hispanic organizations engaged in community development, including economic development, housing, employment and training, business assistance, health, and other fields."

Ableism 101
